Michael Melia named Hartford, Conn., administrative correspondent for The Associated Press

AP names Melia as Hartford, Conn., correspondent

HARTFORD, Conn. — Michael Melia, a correspondent for The Associated Press in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has been named administrative correspondent for the news cooperative in Hartford, where he will oversee news operations in Connecticut.

The announcement was made Thursday by East Regional Editor Larry Rosenthal in Philadelphia.

Melia, 33, has been a reporter and editor for the AP for most of the past 10 years, most recently serving as correspondent for the Caribbean and based in San Juan. He covered the Haiti earthquake, corruption in Puerto Rico and the terrorism trials at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He started with the AP as an intern in the Buenos Aires, Argentina, bureau in 2000. He later worked as a newsman in Raleigh, N.C., and Albany, N.Y., and on the International Desk in New York City as an editor before moving to San Juan in 2006.

Melia is a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and a native of Manchester, Mass.
