MUMBAI - A tribute concert to honour the memory of slain American journalist Daniel Pearl will be held in Goa Thursday, as part of the Daniel Pearl World Music Days.

Pearl, a US journalist based in Mumbai, was killed by terrorists in Pakistan Jan 30, 2002.

Organised by the American Center, Mumbai, and the Kala Academy, Goa, the performing artists at Thursday’s concert will be the Mumbai-based Hipnotribe and The Pulp Society.

“The American Center is proud to be hosting this tribute concert in Goa. It not only honours the memory of Daniel Pearl, but the universality of music and the importance of tolerance and mutual respect in all societies,” American Center director Anne Grimes said here Wednesday.

The Daniel Pearl World Music Days are held annually worldwide and so far have attracted over 4,900 performers in more than 100 countries.

Pearl’s murder by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002 touched millions who never knew him. By developing innovative international programmes focused on journalism, music and respectful dialogue, the Daniel Pearl Foundation seeks to counter the hatred and intolerance that took his life.

The foundation was set up by Pearl’s family and friends to carry forward his mission and to address the root causes of this tragedy, in the spirit, style, and principle that shaped his work and character.

The annual event is designed to raise awareness and promote tolerance and understanding of our shared humanity, through the universal language of music, which, as an accomplished musician, Pearl used it to connect with people.

“Danny was a passionate believer in the power of music to bring people together regardless of ethnic, religious or cultural differences. World Music Days is a tribute to this passion and a powerful instrument in our quest for a hate-free world. Its mission resonates with a broad spectrum of professional artists on every continent, as well as youth and school groups,” said his father Judea Pearl, who heads the foundation.

This is the third year that the American Center has organised the tribute concert for Daniel Pearl.
