SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- Renowned political cartoonist Paul Conrad passed away on September 4. The three time Pulitzer prize winner was 86 at the time of his death. His son David Cameron revealed that he was surrounded by his family at the time of passing on. He also said that he died of natural causes but did not reveal any other details about the legendary cartoonist.
With a career spanning over 50 years, Paul Conrad ensured that the political junkies in California woke up to find themselves outraged or delighted by his cartoons in the Los Angeles Times. He was known for his hilarious digs at the US presidents with the best of his works targeting Richard Nixon. In one of his most famous cartoons he drew a helicopter of Richard Nixon flying over the White House and the caption read ‘One flew over the cuckoo’s nest’. Unlike other political cartoonist, Paul Conrad’s cartoons were simpler and much more powerful in terms of getting the message across. His figures looked bony and sometimes even sinister. Humorist Art Buchwald once said that the name of Paul Conrad struck fear in the hearts of me all over. He gave him a superman like comparison saying that wherever there was corruption, greed or hypocrisy, everyone felt that this was a job for Paul Conrad.
Jimmy Carter’s statement that he found himself lusting at times became the subject of Paul Conrad’s one of the most hilarious and outrageous cartoons. He drew Jimmy Carter mentally undressing the Statue of Liberty. Experts feel that despite the humor, Paul Conrad’s cartoons had a sense of seriousness that the other cartoonists lacked.
