Casino proposed near battlefield splits Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The town where the Civil War’s tide-turning battle was waged is fighting dissension in its own ranks over a casino that would rise near its historic battlefield.

This is the second time in five years that Gettysburg, Pa., has fought over a casino. This time it’s the Mason Dixon Resort & Casino proposed within a mile of Gettysburg National Military Park.

Supporters say the casino plan will bring jobs, more tourists and tax relief to the area. But others worry a casino would cheapen the wholesome reputation that draws tourists to Gettysburg.

Casino principals, supporters and opponents will speak at a public meeting Tuesday with state regulators who are considering the license application.

Developer David LeVan (leh-VAN’) is a noted local philanthropist and former Conrail chairman.
