Panel OKs razing historic Moulin Rouge remains

LAS VEGAS — The remnants of the historic but fire-ravaged Moulin Rouge hotel-casino in Las Vegas will be razed.

Much of the property has already been cleared since a May 2009 fire swept through vacant buildings, and the Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission approved a demolition permit Wednesday.

The Moulin Rouge was the first racially integrated Las Vegas casino in 1955. It closed after six months but hosted a 1960 meeting where Las Vegas Strip hotel owners agreed to accept black guests.

The property changed hands several times before the dilapidated main casino was destroyed in a 2003 arson.

Officials say the property will stay listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Las Vegas Historic Property Register.

The casino’s sign has been preserved at the city’s Neon Museum.
