US military deaths in Afghanistan at 1,130
As of Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at least 1,130 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.
The AP count is six more than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.
At least 911 military personnel have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.
Outside of Afghanistan, the department reports at least 93 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, 11 were the result of hostile action.
The AP count of total OEF casualties outside of Afghanistan is one fewer than the department’s tally.
The Defense Department also counts two military civilian deaths.
Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 7,529 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department.

—Pfc. Benjamen G. Chisholm, 24, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Pvt. Charles M. High, IV, 21, of Albuquerque, N.M.; died Tuesday in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device caused a military vehicle roll-over. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
—Staff Sgt. Derek J. Farley, 24, of Nassau, N.Y.; died Tuesday in the Bala Baluk district of Farah province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated as he attempted to disarm it; assigned to the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Grafenwoehr, Germany.
—Staff Sgt. Michael A. Bock, 26, of Leesburg, Fla.; died Aug. 13 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.
—Cpl. Kristopher D. Greer, 25, of Ashland City, Tenn., died Aug. 8 of wounds received Aug. 6 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 4th Combat Engineering Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, based out of Knoxville, Tenn.
—Sgt. Christopher N. Karch, 23, of Indianapolis; died Aug. 11 in Arghandab Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
