LOS ANGELES (GaeaTimes.com)- The gay and lesbian couples and the LGBT movements supporters in the state of California are ecstatic after a federal judge ruled against the disputed Proposition 8. The Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker said in his lengthy 136 page verdict that the proposition is against the US constitution since it goes against the Equal Protection Clause. The gays and lesbians were forbidden to marry a person of their choice while the heterosexuals could do so owing to the rule. For the last two years the proposition gave the gay and lesbian couples enough anxiety and headache. Just after the verdict came out the reaction of the gay and lesbians were visible. They came out in streets waving rainbow flags and many were seen embracing and kissing each other in joy. They are expecting that marrying their partners will no longer be a problem after the verdict.
Gay marriage and relation has always been a tricky issue in the USA, and with California, just 6 U.S states have legalized it. The controversial proposition 8 was passed two years back with 52 percent votes. However, in certain parts of California like the bay area it was never popular as such. The judge who has given the verdict is gay and his ruling has not gone down well with the supporters of the Proposition 8.
The opponents of gay marriage now want to appeal to the Supreme Court against the new ruling. The verdict has come as a long awaited boon for some gay couples in the state who have been waiting to get their union legalized for several years.
