Michigan’s VanDam snags 6th Angler of Year award

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Kevin VanDam won his sixth Bassmaster Angler of the Year award on Saturday, making him the highest-earning angler in the history of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society.

The Kalamazoo, Mich., angler won his 19th BASS career victory, which ties him with Roland Martin for most wins. Including the $200,000 he picked up on the Alabama River this weekend, his career earnings have reached more than $4.5 million.

“I never get tired of winning,” said VanDam, 42. “This title was the hardest for me to accomplish so it means that much more. I take nothing for granted because I face competition every day that can beat me. It’s easy to stay motivated when that’s the case.”

VanDam pulled in 26 pounds using a variety of crankbaits to pull past third-place Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., who dominated in the regular season, but failed to match VanDam in the postseason.

Reese pulled in 21 pounds, 7 ounces, finishing behind Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., with 24 pounds.

“I’m proud of the season I had,” said Reese, the 2009 Classic champion. “I guess I peaked a little early. I had one of the greatest seasons ever and I know what I’ve accomplished.”

Finishing fourth was Terry Butcher, Evers’ brother-in-law, while Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., jumped from last-place heading into this week to finish fifth.
