Obama to deliver education reform speech Thursday

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will deliver an education reform speech Thursday morning at the National Urban League’s 100th Anniversary Convention in the nation’s capital.

Obama will discuss how his “Race to the Top” program and other initiatives are driving education reform across the country and focusing the nation on the goal of preparing students for college and careers.

Civil rights leaders are openly criticizing the $4.35 billion “Race to the Top” grant competition, claiming it leaves out many minority students.

Later in the morning, the president will meet with his national security team to discuss Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In the afternoon, Obama will deliver remarks and sign the Tribal Law and Order Act in the East Room.
