LONDON - A British couple - aged 97 and 87 - got married at their home in London, making them the oldest newlyweds in the country.
Henry Kerr, just three years shy of his 100th birthday, and his bride Valerie Berkowitz, have a combined age of 184, and have proved it is never too late to find true love, the Daily Express reported Monday.
They fell in love when Valerie joined Henry’s poetry reading circle. They also discovered they had mutual friends from their time both of them were living in South Africa.
They tied the knot Sunday at a ceremony at their home in Golders Green, north London.
Henry had proposed to Valerie over a cup of tea. But she took her time making up her mind, he revealed.
“She was bewildered and overcome and said she would have to think about it. It became quite a joke. I kept asking her and eventually she said yes,” Kerr was quoted as saying.
Both have been married before - Valerie for over 70 years and Henry for over 60 years. And both have children who live in the US.
“These were both long and happy marriages to look back on and it’s hard to replace that happy memory,” Valerie said.
Pamela Darroux, manager of the Sunridge Court residence where the couple lives, said she was pleased the romance had bloomed in her home. “They are very much in love and it has done them a great deal of good.”
