US military deaths in Iraq war at 4,411

As of Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at least 4,411 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The figure includes nine military civilians killed in action. At least 3,488 military personnel died as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.

The AP count is four fewer than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated at 10 a.m. Tuesday EDT.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,874 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

—Spc. Morganne M. McBeth, 19, of Fredericksburg, Va.; died July 2 in Al Asad, Iraq, of wounds sustained July 1 in a noncombat related incident in Khan Al Baghdadi, Iraq; assigned to the 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

—Sgt. Johnny W. Lumpkin, 38, of Columbus, Ga.; died July 2 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained July 1 in a noncombat related equipment incident in Taji, Iraq; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
