Spooked horses take off, injure Iowa parade-goers

BELLEVUE, Iowa — More than a dozen people have been injured at a Fourth of July parade after two horses pulling a carriage got spooked and ran out of control along the parade route.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reported Sunday at least 13 people were injured, including some children.

The newspaper says the horses jumped curbs and slammed into signs and cars as they ran for about eight blocks.

Then, the horses hit a large street sign, flipping the buggy they were pulling and ejecting two people in it. The horses ran another two blocks before running into a trailer.

The newspaper says at least one person has been airlifted to a hospital by helicopter.

A person who answered the phone at the Bellevue Police Department told The Associated Press it would issue a statement shortly.
