New Delhi Airport Has A New Terminal

New Delhi, India, (GaeaTimes.com)- Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has inaugurated a new terminal in the New Delhi airport, Palem. The new terminal has been opened keeping in mind the increase in the air traffic over the past couple of years. India is one of the world’s most populous countries and also a tourist attraction and a new terminal will help to make the capital the gateway to the other parts of the country, feels Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

This also means that the New Delhi airport will have a capacity two times more than its previous one. The new terminal 3, as it has been named, and another in Mumbai are the first steps taken by the Indian government to make airports and air-traveling in India hassle-free. Current estimates reveal that while domestic traffic will go up by 180 million, international traffic will exceed the 50 million mark.

India has also entered into an agreement with international investors so that the new terminal in the New Delhi airport helps to improve on the rising economy of the country. An amount of $2.7 billion has been spent to construct the Terminal 3.

The new terminal in the New Delhi airport, covers an area of more than 5.4 million square feet and is equipped with 97 automated walkways and an equal number of immigration counters. The entire terminal has a total of 78 gates. 20,000 square meters of the total space occupied by the terminal will have a retail space and a parking area for more than 4000 cars. The terminal is expected to begin functioning from the 14th of this month and is expected to draw almost 60 million commuters every year.
