Brown invites rival Whitman to $1.8M home for tea

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jerry Brown has invited his Republican rival to tea at his $1.8 million house to discuss their next debate.

Brown made the invitation during an interview Thursday on KGO radio in San Francisco when asked about his five-story home in the Oakland Hills.

The Associated Press reported last week that Brown rarely mentions his home while he’s on the campaign trail touting his frugality. During that interview, Brown defended his home as a “modest little tree house” that doesn’t have a backyard.

He told reporters Tuesday that he and his wife, Anne Gust, had saved money to buy their dream house.

A spokeswoman for Republican Meg Whitman did not immediately respond to Brown’s on-air invitation.
