Idaho town gathers in support of missing soldier

BOISE, Idaho — Dozens of people have fanned out across an Idaho resort town to replace the now-tattered yellow ribbons that went up after a local soldier went missing in Afghanistan.

The effort Wednesday in Hailey commemorated the one-year mark since Spc. Bowe Bergdahl walked off his base and was captured by the Taliban.

It’s an anniversary that residents hoped they wouldn’t see. Blaine County Sheriff Walt Femling says everyone wishes they were celebrating Bergdahl’s return. But he says until that day comes, the community is focused on reminding Bergdahl’s family that they have support.

Bergdahl’s family had Femling read a statement on their behalf at a local coffee shop where the new ribbons were handed out. They said they’ve been uplifted by encouraging cards, letters and e-mails from around the world.
