California firm buys Honolulu’s Bishop Square

HONOLULU — A California real estate investment trust has paid $232 million for Honolulu’s Bishop Square office complex.

The purchase makes Douglas Emmett Inc. the downtown area’s biggest landlord.

The Santa Monica, Calif.-based company also owns Bishop Place and The Honolulu Club properties.

The company is publicly traded and owns 57 office properties with a combined 14.3 million square feet of leasable space. Most of its properties are in the Los Angeles area.

Douglas Emmett CEO Jordan Kaplan says his company has had its eye on Bishop Square since it bought its first Honolulu property in 2004.
