Police: Teen dies in fall from tower in Conn. park

HAMDEN, Conn. — Police say a teenager has fallen from an observation tower in Connecticut’s Sleeping Giant State Park and has died.

State police say two hikers found 19-year-old Matthew Roche on Wednesday afternoon at the bottom of the Hamden park’s stone tower. They say he had a serious head wound.

Paramedics treated him at the scene and took him to a hospital, where he died of his injury. An autopsy was being done Thursday.

A preliminary investigation by state police detectives revealed the Bristol resident fell from the top of the four-story tower, which resembles a castle.

Lt. J. Paul Vance says no foul play is suspected and nothing suspicious was found in the park, which gets its name from landscape formations that look like a sleeping man.
