Skydiver dies after losing harness, chute

ACAMPO, Calif. — California authorities say a woman died after becoming separated from her harness and parachute during a skydive.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department says the woman was found in a vineyard in Acampo on Thursday with her unopened harness and parachute container more than 100 yards away. She was believed to be a visitor from Belgium.

Deputy Les Garcia says an investigation is under way along with the Federal Aviation Administration, and suicide has not been ruled out.

The woman, who has not been identified pending notification of her family, was with about 20 other skydivers on a plane before the fatal jump.

People who knew her told officials she had made hundreds of jumps.
