Funding doubled for bicycling, walking projects
WASHINGTON — A government report says federal transportation spending on biking and walking projects more than doubled to $1.2 billion in President Barack Obama’s first year in office.
A Federal Highway Administration report released Wednesday said spending on bike and walking projects was less than $600 million in 2008, the last year of the Bush administration. The Obama administration spent $400 million in economic recovery money on bicycling and walking projects, besides other funds.
The administration’s “livability initiative” promotes transportation and housing projects that encourage people to live in densely developed communities where they can walk, bike or take public transportation to work and other destinations rather than drive.
