SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The Supreme Court in the USA will now decide the future of the overstuffed prison system of California which has also become quite expensive. The highest court of the nation agreed to hear the appeal made by the governor of the state Arnold Schwarzenegger. A federal court has given an unprecedented ruling to shed almost 40,000 inmates from a prison which is extremely overcrowded. It allegedly violates the ban of the constitution on unusual and cruel punishments.

This case is going to be a vital test for the prison system of the state. The state administration led by Arnold Schwarzenegger argues that the panel comprising of 3 judges crossed its limit by demanding California cut down on its prison population by one fourth of the capacity in 2 years. Last year the special federal court panel said that the overcrowded prisons in the state make it impossible to give the requisite mental and medical care to the inmates. This violates basic human rights.

The governor’s office which came up with a plan to adhere to the court diktat said that the Supreme Court may allow the state to deal with its prison problems. The governor also said that the Supreme Court may rule that the federal judges not to interfere in the judicial system of the state. Both Matthew Cate, the corrections secretary and governor Arnold Schwarzenegger agree that the prisons are jam packed but they also argue that medical care facility can be improved. They also feel prison population should not be reduced in a hurry. They do not think the safety of the citizens should be compromised.
