South Korea rules out possibility of war in Korean Peninsula

SEOUL - South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has allayed fears of war breaking out in the Korean Peninsula by affirming that they have no such intentions. Although he emphasised that South Korea will not take North Korean provocation lying down and will “strongly suppress” it.

“There is no possibility of a war. There has been occasionally and locally peace-threatening behaviour (from the North) but we will strongly suppress it,” Lee’s spokesman, contacted by telephone, quoted him as saying at a meeting with businessmen in Singapore.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of a security conference in the city state, the China Daily reports.

Meanwhile, Pyongyang continued to deny charges of sinking the South Korean warship that sparked off the tensions between the two discordant neighbours.

On Friday, South Korea took its dispute with North Korea to the UN Security Council, saying Pyongyang must acknowledge that it sank the warship and that its “reprehensible” action was endangering peace. (ANI)
