‘Krispy Kreme’ had no criteria for giving out the sweet snack as their participating counters gave away free donuts all over America and Canada. ‘Fractured Prune’ followed ‘Dunkin Donuts’ by presenting customers with a donut every time they purchased a beverage. ‘Lamar Donuts‘ participated in the celebrations by handing out free Ray’s original glazed donut without the need of any purchases. “Donut Connection’ showed a more technological option with printable coupons on their websites that provided free donuts with the purchase of every jumbo coffee.
For Americans who were unaware of the participating stores, or unfortunate enough to not have any around them, had all the store locations available on the web. The Donut Day 2010 became a grand celebration for the sweet-toothed and a complete nightmare for the people on a diet. The custom of Donut Day started as early as 1938 with women serving donuts to soldiers in World War I. The group of women called themselves ‘Salvation Army Lassies’. The records point to to a woman Lt. Col. Helen Purviance who is known as the first Donut Girl They became the only people apart from the personnel who were allowed to go the front lines of World War I. The age old tradition has been changed into a celebration day where American families go out together to gorge on the American staple.
