Public art project unlocks secret doors in NYC
NEW YORK — A new public art project plays up New York’s time-honored practice of recognizing dignitaries with a key to the city.
Artist Paul Ramirez Jonas’ concept distributes keys that unlock hidden museum rooms, private gardens and more.
The public can pick up the keys from a Times Square kiosk until June 27. The places they unlock will be available until Labor Day.
Jonas created the project in collaboration with the nonprofit Creative Time.
Spokesman Nicholas Weist said some keys open a concealed door to an exhibition of Faberge jewels at the Brooklyn Museum. Another key opens a private vegetable plot at a Bronx community garden.
There are 25 sites throughout the five boroughs. Visitors must go to the sites during regular hours.
