Kyrgyzstan: no talks yet on new fuel deal with US
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan — Kyrgyzstan’s interim government says it has not yet begun talks with Washington on a new fuel supply deal for the U.S. military base.
Spokesman Farid Niyazov says U.S. authorities have yet to respond to the provisional government’s queries about fuel contracts signed with firms controlled by the toppled Kyrgyz president’s son.
The new Kyrgyz authorities have launched a corruption investigation into those deals.
Niyazov said Wednesday that talks with the U.S. have not yet started, though the U.S. military said Tuesday it had stopped refueling tanker planes at its Manas air base in Kyrgyzstan while the fuel prices are renegotiated. Flights to ferry military personnel and supplies to and from Afghanistan have continued.
