Loyalty takes butler from poor Nepal village to NY

NEW YORK — He was a teenager farmer raised in a straw, mud and stone house in Nepal — and he turned into a jet-setter meeting the likes of Andy Warhol and Patty Smith.

Indra Tamang now owns apartments in the famed Dakota building off New York City’s Central Park and prized art on the Sotheby’s auction block.

Tamang inherited the estate of Ruth Ford after 36 years of loyal household service. Her brother first met him in Nepal when Tamang could barely write and lived in a village with no running water or electricity.

The budding butler later lived in Paris and the Greek island of Crete. He took photos of celebrities exhibited in galleries.

The 57-year-old father of three is preparing for auctions of his treasures starting Thursday in Paris, then New York.

And he says, “Thank you, America.”
