Canada to lobby Europeans against bank tax
TORONTO — Canada’s prime minister travels to Europe next week where is he expected to lobby against a proposed international bank tax.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office said Thursday Harper will travel to the United Kingdom and France on June 2-4, ahead of next month’s G-20 summit in Canada.
Harper is expected to meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who support the tax that seeks to keep taxpayers from being saddled with the cost of future financial bailouts.
Harper argues the tax would not be fair to Canada — which avoided bank failures in the recent crisis.
Harper dispatched his top ministers around the world earlier this month to wage a campaign against the tax.
