Police: Brazilian boy, sitter fall in well and die

SAO PAULO — Brazilian authorities say a toddler and his 12-year-old baby sitter were jumping on the cover of a well when it broke and they fell to their deaths.

Police Lt. Lidiana Albuquerque says 20-month-old Joaquim Bezerra and Flavia Machado were feeding a dog while sitting on the wooden cover of a well Thursday morning in a low-income neighborhood of the city of Maceio. When they started to jump on the cover, it suddenly cracked and they fell 260 feet (80 meters).

Albuquerque says the toddler died instantly and the girl shortly after being rescued. The well is located on a small trucking company’s property.

She says that Flavia was Joaquim’s neighbor and often cared for him while his parents were away at work.
