UK PM Cameron to meet Afghan President Karzai

LONDON — British Prime Minister David Cameron will have his first meeting with a foreign leader when he sits down with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Cameron’s Downing Street office says the leaders will meet Saturday at Chequers, the country residence of the British prime minister.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said Karzai is stopping in Britain on his way back from the United States, where he met with President Barack Obama.

She said Cameron and Karzai would discuss “progress in Afghanistan,” but the conversation would also allow them to get to know each other better. She spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policy.

British forces have been in Afghanistan since the beginning of operations in 2001, and 251 soldiers have died in action during the conflict.
