Obama telephones new British prime minister

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has telephoned Britain’s new prime minister, Conservative leader David Cameron.

Cameron became prime minister Tuesday after Gordon Brown submitted his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II. Cameron’s Conservative Party won the most seats, though not a majority, in Britain’s national election last week.

There was no immediate word from the White House on what Obama said during the call from the Oval Office.
