Kansas City museum to open new Egyptian Galleries
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is opening is refurbished Ancient Art Galleries featuring a 2,300-year-old coffin of an Egyptian noblewoman.
The coffin is the centerpiece of the new Egyptian Galleries, which underwent a $1.7 million, two-year renovation.
Robert Cohon is the curator of ancient art for the Nelson-Atkins. He says he hopes the Egyptian galleries will impress adults and children alike.
The mummy of the noblewoman, isn’t in the collection. But the new display includes another mummy, acquired from Emory University.
The Egyptian Galleries leads into the refurbished gallery of ancient art, which includes several signature pieces from the Nelson’s collection.
The new galleries open Saturday, and admission is free.
