Nigeria: Residents flee over fears of new violence
JOS, Nigeria — Witnesses say people are fleeing their homes in central Nigeria over fears of renewed religious violence between Christians and Muslims.
Witnesses say there has been at least one death in the city of Jos and people began fleeing on Saturday.
A military spokesman confirmed there was unrest in the city, but gave no details.
Jos has been the epicenter of religious violence in Nigeria’s “middle belt,” where dozens of ethnic groups vie for control of fertile lands. Politics, jobs and land often motivate violence that falls along religious lines.
More than 200 people — mostly Christians — died in March massacres in villages south of Jos. More than 300 people — mostly Muslims — died in January during rioting in the same region.
