NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com)- The residents of New York City who were worried about a doorman strike, can relax for now. The building owners association and the union representing New York City doormen were involved in a war over issues like wage hike and leaves etc for quite some time. Kwame Patterson, who is a union spokesperson said that the deal agreed by both the groups involve a 10% wage hike and no reduction in workers benefits. The cancellation of the strike has come as a welcome relief for nearly 1 million apartment dwellers in New York who need to depend on the doormen for getting a number of jobs done regularly.

There are at least 30,000 doormen in New York who planned to join the strike. The strike would have made things extremely tough for the residents including the elderly lot. The agreement reached by 32BJ Service Employees International Union and the building owner’s association, Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations Inc, will be valid for a 4 year period. The residents of New York City need Doormen for performing tasks like dropping mails, disposing garbage and even making sure the right kind of people are let in to their apartments.

The last time the Doorman strike problem plagued New York, was way back in 1991. A number of residents got apprehensive when they came to know about the strike first. Some apartment owners started scampering for alternatives. However, now that the strike has been called off, they are a relieved lot. They have expressed the reactions in their Twitter and Facebook accounts.
