U.S.: No troops flights for now through Kyrgyzstan
TAMPA, Fla. — A U.S. Central Command spokesman says the military does not know when it will resume flying troops to Afghanistan through a key air base in Kyrgyzstan after a revolt there that ousted the Central Asian nation’s president.
A spokesman for the Florida-based command center in charge of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan says troop transports to and from Afghanistan were suspended last week at the Manas airbase.
Major John Redfield told The Associated Press flights resumed briefly Friday and then a few hundred troops were flown back to the U.S. Monday after being stuck at Manas by the shutdown. Other than that, flights to and from Afghanistan remain indefintely suspended.
Manas is a key support center for the international military campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
