Obama’s in-box brims with letters, faxes, e-mails

At the high-water mark, President Barack Obama was getting about 40,000 letters, e-mails and faxes a day.

The pace is slower now, but there’s still no shortage of public comment.

Each week, Obama typically gets 15,000 to 25,000 letters, 20,000 to 25,000 faxes, 120,000 to 150,000 e-mails and 10,000 to 12,000 phone calls, according to the White House Correspondence Office. The 10 items that the president reviews each day are selected from among letters, faxes and printouts of e-mail.

Obama responds to many of them in writing. For e-mailers, Obama’s written responses are scanned by staff and sent back as an attachment. The original is also mailed to them.
