Weapons, explosives seized ahead of Iraq elections

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s chief military spokesman for Baghdad says security forces have seized 10 weapons and explosives caches that may have been destined for attacks during parliamentary elections this weekend.

Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi says security forces also had intelligence suggesting that “terrorist plots” were being hatched to disrupt the March 7 vote, but that he was confident authorities would foil them.

Al-Moussawi spoke to reporters on Tuesday. His comments came just hours after U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, who oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said he expected there will be a threat from extremists to disrupt the election.

Al-Qaida in Iraq, the country’s deadliest terror group, has warned that it intends to disrupt the vote.
