CA thieves make off with $1 million in jewels

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. — Authorities say thieves drilled through the wall of a San Juan Capistrano jewelry store, dismantled the security system and made off with a safe filled with up to $1 million in jewels.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department says the robbery happened either late Tuesday or early Wednesday at Mission Jewelers.

Thieves tunneled in through the shared wall of a vacant shop next door and left through the back door of the jewelry store, after taking apart a metal security gate.

Investigators say it probably took more than one person to move the 1,000-pound safe.

Authorities gathered some evidence at the scene as well as surveillance video.
