Police: 3 mortar rounds hit Baghdad’s Green Zone

BAGHDAD — Iraqi authorities say three mortar rounds hit the heavily fortified Green Zone in the center of Baghdad, injuring six Iraqis.

A police officer in the nearby Karkh police department said the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital. He said it was not known whether Iraqi or American military personnel were injured in the blasts.

The officer said some houses and cars in the area were also damaged.

An official with the Interior Ministry confirmed the report.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The U.S. military said it had a report about an indirect fire incident in the Green Zone but had no further information.

The Green Zone houses Iraq’s parliament, ministries and the U.S. Embassy.
