JOHN MELLENCAMP’s fans in his native Indiana are pushing for the veteran singer to run for the U.S. Senate in a new online campaign.
The Jack and Diane hitmaker campaigned for U.S. President Barack Obama in 2008 and now Democrats in his hometown want Mellencamp to break from music and pursue politics full-time.
After Indiana Senator Evan Bayh announced he will not run for re-election, liberal bloggers have been calling on the rocker to fill his seat, reports the New York Post.
Almost 1,000 people have joined the “Draft John Mellencamp for Senate” group on social networking website Facebook.com, to back Mellencamp.
A spokesperson for the singer, who has never held public office, declined to comment on whether Mellencamp will take up the challenge.
