LONDON - Tristram Gay, a recruit in Britain’s Royal Navy, is changing his name as he doesn’t want to be known as the Gay sailor.

Gay, 21, fears his name would make him a target aboard, Daily Express reported Friday.

Tristram has applied to change his name to Tristan Fareel before he signs up for the sea.

“In the Navy everyone is called by their surname so I would get a lot of stick with my name being Gay.

“It was different in the old days when gay meant happy,” Gay was quoted as saying.

He decided on the new name after “watching the film `Blow’ and there was a character with the name Fareel which seemed perfect”.
