Angelina Jolie visits Haiti with UN refugee body
JACMEL, Haiti — Angelina Jolie met with Haitian earthquake survivors living in camps and visited a flattened school Wednesday, the second day of a visit as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations’ refugee agency.
The actress, representing the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, flew by helicopter to the southern city of Jacmel where she visited a camp for Haitians made homeless. Some 500,000 people are living in camps around the country since the Jan. 12 earthquake. She also visited a school destroyed by the quake.
Jolie later met with President Rene Preval about challenges confronting the country since the disaster.
Her visit began Tuesday when she met with U.N. officials in Port-au-Prince and visited an SOS Villages camp for orphans outside the capital.
Jolie also toured a Doctors Without Borders hospital in a Port-au-Prince suburb, waving to onlookers. She and husband Brad Pitt have contributed $1 million to Doctors Without Borders for its emergency medical operations in Haiti.
Jolie has previously visited Iraq, Thailand, Pakistan and other countries with UNHCR.
