JAL to decide on alliance partner soon
TOKYO — The new president of Japan Airlines says the carrier will decide on its alliance partner “as soon as possible” but wouldn’t provide a timeframe for a decision on sticking with American Airlines or shifting to Delta Air Lines.
Masaru Onishi said during a press conference Monday that discussions are ongoing within JAL and the company’s stance is “neutral.”
JAL filed for bankruptcy two weeks ago and is planning a major restructuring.
Its Asian routes are a draw for Delta and its SkyTeam partners, who say they would give JAL $1 billion to leave American’s oneworld alliance for Skyteam. American and its partners have offered $1.4 billion for JAL to stay.
