Officials: 35 detainees face trial or commission
WASHINGTON — Government officials say a task force has recommended about three dozen Guantanamo Bay detainees be brought to the United States to face trial or military commissions.
The two officials say a presidentially-created task force decided about 35 terror suspects held at the U.S. naval base in Cuba should be tried in U.S. civilian courts or military commissions, and 47 others should be held indefinitely without charges.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the task force’s work.
If enacted, its recommendations would likely mean 35 suspects will be brought to the United States for prosecution. It is unclear how many of them would be sent to military commissions, which could be held at a planned prison in Illinois.
