Scores of refugees land on Corsican shores
AJACCIO, Corsica — Police in Corsica say about 100 refugees, probably Kurds, have landed on the southern shore of the Mediterranean island.
The local gendarme service describes the group as refugees, including women and children, and says they are probably of Kurdish origin.
Police say they were unloaded from a boat Friday morning on a beach in Bonifacio on southern Corsica.
French maritime police are searching for the boat. Local authorities are taking in the refugees in a Bonifacio gymnasium.
No other details were immediately available, including information about where the refugees came from.
Corsica, off southern France, is a popular vacation destination that rarely sees arrivals of refugees on its shores.
