African aid groups ask for aid for Haiti

JOHANNESBURG — Prominent South Africans including Nelson Mandela’s wife are appealing for aid for Haiti’s earthquake survivors.

Graca Machel, the wife of the former South African president, on Friday urged Africans to donate to the Africa for Haiti Campaign to show gratitude for the aid Africa receives. The campaign represents nearly a dozen aid groups from around Africa.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a Nobel Peace laureate, also appealed Friday for donations.

Several African governments have pledged aid already, including South Africa, which pledged $135,000. Senegal’s president pledged $1 million and offered a region of Senegal to Haitians wishing to relocate. Chad offered $500,000, Congo offered $2.5 million and Sierra Leone offered $100,000.
