White House: No events to mark 1st year in office

WASHINGTON — Don’t expect any partying at the White House on Wednesday.

Press secretary Robert Gibbs says nothing special is being planned to take note of Barack Obama’s first year as president. Obama took the oath of office on the steps of the Capitol around noon on Jan. 20, 2009.

Gibbs acknowledged that Wednesday is an “anniversary of types” but says the staff isn’t focused on marking the first year.

Obama’s anniversary will arrive one day after a special election for the Massachusetts Senate seat long held by Democrats. Obama’s push for overhauling the health care system is largely dependent on the outcome.

Obama is scheduled to hold an event Wednesday highlighting National Mentoring Month.
