Spain: EU envoy in Haiti not confirmed dead
MADRID — Spain’s Foreign Ministry says a missing European Union envoy to Haiti was mistakenly identified as being among the dead.
The ministry said Monday that the United Nations had wrongly reported that the body of Pilar Juarez, a Spaniard, had been found in the rubble of the UN headquarters in Port-au-Prince, where she was known to have been in a meeting at the time of last week’s earthquake.
Juarez is one of 10 Spaniards still missing.
EU Foreign Affairs chief Catherine Ashton said Sunday she had received confirmation of Juarez death.
The ministry said it had expressed its regrets to Juarez’s family for the erroneous information and had asked officials in Haiti to step up checks on hospitals in a bid to find the woman.
