Lending a hand: Ways the Obamas have helped out

Some ways that President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, have participated in community service activities:

2009

—Jan. 19: The president-elect helps paint a homeless shelter for teenagers on the Martin Luther King holiday; Michelle Obama assembles care packages for U.S. troops.

—March 5: Michelle Obama serves lunch at a soup kitchen several blocks from the White House.

—April 21: The president and first lady join Vice President Joe Biden, Biden’s wife, Jill, former President Bill Clinton and other volunteers to plant trees at a national park site in northeast Washington.

—April 29: Michelle Obama, Jill Biden and more than 100 congressional spouses bag lunches for hungry children at a food bank in Washington.

—June 22: The first lady helps refurbish a school playground in San Francisco.

—June 25: The Obamas go to Fort McNair in Washington to load backpacks with books, healthy snacks and toys for children of the men and women of the armed forces.

—Sept. 11: The Obamas paint the living room of a Habitat for Humanity house in Washington.

—Nov. 25: The Obama family passes out turkeys, stuffing and other Thanksgiving favorites to people at a food pantry organization.

—Dec. 16: Michelle Obama visits a Toys for Tots warehouse near Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia to deliver a portion of the more than 500 toys collected during a White House drive. She helps sort a pile of toys for girls and appealed for gifts for 11- to 14-year-olds.

—Dec. 21: The president reads “The Polar Express” to kids at a Boys & Girls Club in northeast Washington.

—Dec. 22: Michelle Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha, and family dog Bo visit patients at the Children’s National Medical Center. She reads “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” to children.

2010

—Jan. 18: The first family visits a social services organization in Washington, where they served lunch and chatted up clients.
