Clinton says US still open to talks with Iran
WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the Obama administration is not closing the door on possible negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, despite intransigence from Tehran.
Speaking to reporters at the State Department on Monday, Clinton said it is clear that U.S. efforts in 2009 to engage Iran in nuclear talks are not fruitful. And she accused Tehran of what she called “ruthless repression” of protesters. But Clinton added that the U.S. has not given up hope for a breakthrough.
President Barack Obama had said he would move toward tougher sanctions against Iran if the Iranians did not show signs of a willingness to engage in negotiations on their nuclear program by the end of 2009.
