Pakistani troops kill 10 militants in northwest

PARACHINAR, Pakistan — A government official says Pakistani fighter jets have destroyed three militant hide-outs near the Afghan border, killing at least 10 suspected insurgents.

Sami Ullah says the strikes early Tuesday were aimed at local militants in the Orakzai tribal region, where authorities launched an operation recently.

So far, more than 100 insurgents and five soldiers have died in gunbattles there.

Orakzai is considered a major base for the Pakistani Taliban.

The region has witnessed numerous airstrikes over the past few months.
