NAWADIH - Security forces in Nawadih, Jharkhand have introduced community-policing programme to tackle Maoists in the region.
Locals were given food and clothing as incentives, as part of the programme on Sunday
According to Anoop T. Mathew, Superintendent of Police of Palamu, such programmes help bridge gaps between the police and locals, and also protects them from recruiting by the Maoists.
“It helps in bridging the gap between the police and the villagers. Last year we had organised this program in the village. At that timevillagers helped us in solving a kidnapping case. I think it is the result of such programs that villagers in large numbers are coming forward to help the police” he said.
The villagers said they were grateful to the police for introducing the programme.
Jai Govind Prasad, a villager, said: “People have received sarees and dhotis (traditional Indian drapes), chocolates and biscuits. It is nice to see people happy”
In India the Maoist insurgency has gripped nearly one-third of the country in violence and is spreading into rural pockets in 20 of the country’s 28 states. (ANI)
